Please Note: Woods such as redwood, red cedar, mahogany, Douglas fir, etc. contain tannic acid which tends to migrate to the surface and discolor the stain, especially noticeable when using light colors. The discoloration is not harmful and can usually be removed. Apply a cleaning solution of All Wood Cleaner. Do not allow cleaning solution to dry on wood surfaces.

Surface Preparation

Great Preparation is the Key to Application Success!

All surfaces must be cleaned before applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer for best saturation and performance.

    • All new/ bare surfaces should be cleaned with All Wood Cleaner before initial application of Seal-Once Total Wood Protector for best saturation and performance.
    • Remove algae, grime, mold and mildew stains, mill scale(on new wood such as western red cedar, IPE and Douglas fir) and old oil-based semi-transparent stains using a low pressure washer.
    • We do not recommend sanding. Pores of the wood may fill with sawdust impeding the penetration of Seal-Once Total Wood Protector. If sanding is required, use a garden hose or low pressure washer to remove the sawdust.
  • After cleaning, test absorbency of wood by sprinkling a few drops of water on the surface. If the water does not readily penetrate the surface, additional stripping is necessary before applying Seal-Once.

Surface Preparation for new, bare wood

  1. Spray the surface with clean water, wetting the wood.
  2. Mix All Wood Cleaner according to manufacturer’s directions on the container.
  3. Apply All Wood Cleaner from bottom to top with a pump up sprayer.
  4. Allow cleaner to dwell on the surface for 15-20 minutes. Scrub any areas that have excess dirt, pollen or mildew collected on the surface with a stiff bristle brushWarning: Never use steel wool on wood.
  5. Rinse with a pressure washer at no more than 500 psi. Washing with a pressure washer above 500 psi can damage wood.
  6. Allow wood to dry for 3-5 dry, warm days before applying wood finish. Most finishes require wood to below a specific moisture content.  Make sure to check the wood with a moisture meter before applying wood finish.

Surface Preparation for maintenance cleaning

Please note: This cleaning solution will remove mold and mildew and will not remove the tint.

Maintenance Cleaning Surfaces Finished with Seal-Once Total Wood Protector

Please note: This maintenance cleaning solution is recommended by the manufacturer of Seal-Once    Total Wood Protector. It will protect the tint while removing mold, mildew and dirt.

Mix a solution of one gallon water, 14 oz. bleach and one ounce of Dawn® type dish detergent.

  1. Spray on surface with pump up sprayer.
  2. Allow to dwellfor 15 minutes.
  3. Do not allowsolution to dry on the wood surface.
  4. Wash off completelyto avoid streaking or color fading.

Surface Preparation for weathered, gray wood

Use All Wood Cleaner according to directions to remove gray wood weathered from UV exposure.

Check the Moisture Content of Your Logs

Do not apply Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer to wood with over 22% moisture content.

To test the moisture content of your wood, borrow a moisture meter from your contractor or purchase one at your local hardware store. For quick reference:

Laminated logs: The moisture content of laminated logs is generally below 14%.  These logs are usually ready for immediate application of Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer once they have been cleaned and allowed to dry for the appropriate amount of time. Always use a moisture meter to confirm the moisture content.

Kiln-dried or air dried logs: Use a moisture meter to check.

Green, wet, or treated logs: These logs have a moisture content greater than 22%. Allow the logs to sit in a dry area and check their moisture content on a regular basis. Logs with high moisture content can take up to 6 months to 1 year to reach the appropriate 22% or below moisture content for applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer.

Apply a Wood Preservative

A wood preservative (borate) is only necessary for new construction with logs, siding, and structures that are infested with powder post beetles and termitesNot needed for deck applications.

Have your logs been pre-treated with a wood preservative (borate) at the factory or mill? Contact your log or siding provider if unsure.

What is a wood preservative?

Wood preservatives (borate) make wood toxic to wood damaging organisms such as powder post beetles, carpenter ants and fungi. Wood preservatives do not protect against Carpenter Bees and other wood drilling insects, only those that ingest wood. Click here to find out about additives available for prevention of Carpenter Bees.

Why apply a wood preservative (borate) before applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer?

Applying a wood preservative can protect your home from damaging organisms for the life of the home. Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer soaks into wood to create a film that protects against mold/mildew growth and repels water. If a tint is chosen with Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer, the tint provides UV protection.  Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer on its own is not a wood preservative. LogFinish.com recommends applying ShellGuard RTU or ShellGuard Concentrate to your logs before applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer.

Caulk All Gaps and Checks

Caulking is only necessary if your project contains logs and sidingNot needed for deck applications.

It is natural for wood to crack/check over time due to changing seasons, temperature and aging.

Fill any spaces between the logs and upward facing cracks/checks in the wood after applying a wood preservative and before applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer. Fill all joints, cracks, and nail holes with a good quality acrylic latex caulk/filler created specifically for use with wood like Energy Seal or Check Mate 2 prior to applying finish.

Test the Stain

We always recommended performing a two coat color test to a clean, dry, bare area of the structure that you are planning on applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer.  Please Note: Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer is difficult to remove once it has been applied. Before doing a full application make sure that your color selection is correct, has a look you want, and a maintenance schedule you can manage.

Application

Weather Conditions during Application

  • Do not use if air or surface temperature is below 40°F / 4.44°C
  • Do not apply in rain or when rain is imminent
  • For best results apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight.
  • If applying in direct sunlight and wood is hot, spray with a mist of water and apply Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer immediately on dampened surface.

Apply Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer

Please Note:

  • New pressure treated wood should be allowed to dry 3-6 months before applying Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer.
  • Clear Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer will not provide UV Protection, only an added Seal-Once™ Tint will protect wood from sun damage. Without tint added, wood will gray naturally within 2 years of application.
  • Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer is a two-coat application on clean, dry, bare wood with moisture content below 22%. Any less than two coats will lead to greatly decreased durability.
  • Wood already coated with Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer, requires one maintenance coat depending on weathering. Please see the Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer Maintenance section for more details.

  10. Apply 2nd coat within 1-2 hours or more of 1st coat depending on temperature. 1st coat should be dry to the touch.
  11. On very porous, aged or media blasted wood a 3rd coat may be necessary.
  12. Clean tools with soap and warm water.
  13. Store at above 32° F and keep from freezing.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance and annual attention to your log home can save you money and timeProper maintenance starts with visual inspection. Weather, exposure and altitude may vary, so maintenance may be needed sooner than later in some locations.

Every Year:

  • Inspect logs and check for any upward facing checks/cracks that can hold water.
  • Fill all checks with backer rod and Check Mate 2 when the wood is completely dry.
  • Examine caulking at corners, butt joints, windows and doors, and fill any voids with backer rod and Energy Seal.
  • After filling cracks and checks, perform an annual maintenance cleaning with Log Wash to clean off the accumulation of dirt and pollen.
  • Check for wood that looks dried out; shows color changes or fading of Seal-Once Total Wood Protection Waterproofing Wood Sealer.
