Surface Preparation

General surface preparation for New or Unfinished Wood

All wood surfaces must be thoroughly clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew, mill glaze and previous coatings before applying Sikkens ProLuxe Cetol UV Interior Wood Finish. Clean surface with a solution of four (4) ounces of 100% powdered Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) or phosphate-free substitute in one gallon of warm water.

  1. Remove hardware. Any hardware that cannot be removed should be covered with painters tape.
  2. Clean surface with a solution of four (4) ounces of 100% powdered Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) or phosphate-free substitute in one gallon of warm water.
  3. Wipe surface with a damp cloth or sponge and clear water to remove any residue and allow to dry. Do not allow solution to dry on the wood surface.
  4. Fill any nail holes or cracks with a good quality acrylic wood filler such as Energy Seal matching the color of the wood. Do not use oil-based fillers, putties or wax sticks. Allow to dry completely before sanding.
  5. Sand the surface with 150-180 grit sand paper. Always sand with the grain for a smoother surface and no sanding marks. Remove sanding dust with vacuum, then wipe surface with a damp cloth to remove any remaining particle. For a smoother final finish sand surface again with 180-220 grit sandpaper and wipe clean.

Exotic Hardwood

  1. 1. Ipe, mahogany, iron wood, tiger wood and teak woods exhibit a dense cell structure which may reduce the ability of a coating to penetrate the wood surface.
  2. Clean and prepare all wood surfaces as specified under general surface preparation.
  3. Immediately prior to applying coating, wipe surface with acetone.

Previously Coated Wood

  1. Previous stains, varnishes or sealers must be completely and thoroughly removed prior to application of Cetol UV Interior Wood Finish.
  2. After removal of previous coatings, clean and prepare surface as specified under general surface preparation.
