IS Q8 LOG OIL SAFE TO USE?

Yes! Outlast Q8 Log Oil is safe to use according to the manufacturer’s directions. Q8 is an EPA registered wood preservative that contains Copper 8 Quinolinolate.  Copper 8 has very low mammalian toxicity and has been approved for use on wood that comes into incidental contact with food such as picnic tables, produce bins, etc.

DOES Q8 LOG OIL PROTECT MY HOME FROM WOOD EATING INSECTS?

Yes! Copper 8 Quinolinolate is very toxic to a broad range of wood eating insects.  Termites and powder post beetles are killed by ingesting wood treated with Copper 8 Quinolinolate.

WILL Q8 LOG OIL PROTECT MY HOME AGAINST CARPENTER BEES?

No! Carpenter Bees drill into the wood but do not eat wood. To protect your home from Carpenter Bees add NBS 30 or Bug Juice to your Q8 Log Oil. See the Carpenter Bee Solutions section of LogFinish.com for further information on these products. For spot infestations of Carpenter Bees in between stain applications use NBS-30 mixed with water and applied per instructions with a pump up insecticide sprayer. All of these products can be found at LogFinish.com

WHAT SURFACES CAN Q8 LOG OIL BE APPLIED TO?

Q8 Log Oil is designed for application to vertical and overhead surfaces on log homes, wood siding, cedar siding, shake shingles and T-111 plywood siding. Q8 Log Oil may also be used on pressure treated decks and railings.

WHAT COVERAGE RATE CAN YOU EXPECT WITH Q8?

On smooth wood surfaces such as milled logs Q8 Log Oil coverage will be approximately 175 SF per gallon. On rougher surfaces such as hand hewn logs, resawn wood siding, shingles or T-111 coverage will be around 125 SF per gallon.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE A WOOD SURFACE FOR THE APPLICATION OF Q8 Log Oil?

Q8 Log Oil must penetrate to be effective. For this to happen the log or wood surface MUST be porous and free of mill glaze. All mill glaze, dirt, mildew, or any previously applied film coatings must be removed prior to application of Q8 Log Oil.

On wood surfaces that have turned gray from UV exposure, LogFinish.com recommends using X-180 Weathered Wood Restorer to thoroughly clean the wood surface and remove mill glaze prior to application of the new finish. X-180 cleans and removes mill glaze in one application. The oxalic acid in the X-180 will also brighten the wood to produce best results. For new wood surfaces without sun damage LogFinish.com recommends using Mill Glaze Away to remove mill glaze and prepare the wood for staining.

When using either of these products thoroughly rinse the wood and allow to dry 3-5 days before application of Q8 Log Oil. Good prep work is the key to getting great results. The absorption of Q8 Log Oil is directly related to the porosity of the wood and more absorption of oil results in a better and longer lasting treatment. Because of this, new unseasoned wood will require more frequent applications than older dryer wood.

If an existing film forming finish is present, it must be removed prior to applying Q8 Log Oil. Some water based finishes can be easily removed by just pressure washing. More durable film finishes will need to be removed with a chemical stripper such as SoyGel or ABR Citrus Paint remover. See the Paint Stripper section on LogFinish.com for complete information on these environmentally friendly products.

Sanding is not recommended. If sanding is required to remove a prior coating, re-open the pores of the wood with a chemical or detergent cleaner.

WHAT WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE BEST FOR APPLYING Q8 LOG OIL?

Outlast Q8 Log Oil can be applied through a wide range of weather conditions.  While wet or cold logs/wood can be coated with Q8, they will not absorb as much product as dry/warm logs and thus will require retreatment sooner.  Below 50 degrees, Q8 Log Oil becomes too thick to pump through a pump sprayer and will require a hand brushing application. Warm dry weather provides the ideal condition to maximize absorption of Q8 Log Oil. Application during warm dry weather lengthens the time before retreatment will be necessary. If it rains within 36 hours of a Q8 Log Oil application streaking of the pigment may result. When rain occurs shortly after initial application simply re-spray the surface with more product, let it sit for 15 minutes and smooth out any streaks with a stiff paint brush.

WHEN SHOULD ADDITIONAL MILDEWCIDE BE ADDED TO MY Q8 LOG OIL??

Q8 Log Oil contains an adequate level of mildewcide for most applications. LogFinish.com recommends adding MX3 Complete Mildewcide to Q8 Log Oil for homes in very humid areas. We also recommend adding MX3 for homes located adjacent to rivers, streams or lakes as well as in forested locations where there is little sun or in hollows with little sun and poor air circulation. Click Here for information on MX3 Complete Mildewcide.

HOW DO YOU APPLY Q8 LOG OIL?

Stir Q8 Log Oil well before use and stir occasionally during application to keep pigments suspended.  Intermix batches from different lot numbers to insure uniform color.  The fastest, easiest application method is by use of a pump-up type sprayer with a plastic or non-corrosive tip. LogFinish.com recommends the Solo 475 pump up sprayer.  Apply as much Q8 Log Oil as the wood will absorb.  Always back brush Q8 into the wood to achieve best results.

CAN AIRLESS SPRAYERS BE USED TO APPLY Q8 Log Oil?

Airless spray applicators are not recommended due to excessive atomization and subsequent product loss.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN UP THE TOOLS USED TO APPLY Q8 Log Oil?

Q8 application equipment can be cleaned with laundry detergent and water or mineral spirits.

WHAT IS THE REAPPLICATION SCHEDULE FOR Q8 LOG OIL?

Generally, it is recommended that new construction be re-treated with Q8 Log Oil within 24 months of the initial application.  Exactly when during the 24 months is determined by the initial moisture content of the log and/or the temperature/weather conditions at initial application.  Coverage needs to be in the 125 - 175 square feet per gallon range.  For best results apply the maximum amount of Q8 Log Oil that the wood will absorb. Under application of Q8 is most often the primary cause of short treatment life.  However, only one coat at a time is recommended.  The water repellency in Outlast Q8 Log Oil builds quickly making it not feasible to apply multiple coats until a period of years has elapsed.  (It becomes so water repellent, it repels itself!)  Once a second coat of Q8 has been applied, additional applications should be applied as needed, usually every 4-8 years.

IS Q8 LOG OIL AVAILABLE IN CANADA?

No. Q8 Log Oil is an EPA registered wood preservative that is listed for sale only in the United States.
