Shellguard Concentrate

14% BORATE

WOOD PRESERVATIVE

WHAT IS SHELL-GUARD

Shell-Guard is an EPA registered Glycol/Borate Wood Preservative. This new generation of preservative combines the well known effectiveness of borates with a glycol system that increases the penetration into the wood to enhance the action of the borate. Shell-Guard is easy to use. It is a completely odorless and colorless preservative that requires just one application for the life of your home. Once applied to bare wood with a brush or as a spray it will kill those insects that eat wood such as wood boring beetles and termites. It also kills the types of fungi that are responsible for wood rot and decay. Shell-Guard makes wood toxic to wood destroying organisms. Shell-Guard is particularly effective in dealing with existing insect infestations.

IS SHELL-GUARD AVAILABLE IN ALL 50 STATES?

Shell-Guard is registered and available for shipment to all 50 states.

IS SHELL-GUARD AVAILABLE IN CANADA?

Due to new Canadian regulations Shell-Guard is not available for sale in Canada.

HOW DOES SHELL-GUARD WORK?

Shell-Guard uses the moisture in the wood to penetrate the entire log and kill insects deep within the wood. Shell-Guard is deadly to most wood predators. Shell-Guard also destroys fungi that cause wood rot and also kills wood-destroying insects. The active ingredients of Shell-Guard are eaten by the insects and transported to their nesting sites to eliminate the insect colony.

WHAT PESTS IS SHELL-GUARD MOST EFFECTIVE WITH?

  • Rot Fungi

  • Powderpost Beetles (Anobiids & Lyctids)

  • Old House Borer Larvae

  • Termites (Drywood, Dampwood,  Formosan & Subterranean)

  • Carpenter Ants

HOW DO YOU PREPARE WOOD FOR A SHELL-GUARD APPLICATION?

Wood to be treated with Shell-Guard must be clean and bare, free of dirt, wax and any existing surface finish. All previous coatings must be removed before applying Shell-Guard. Any mold or mildew should also be removed prior to Shellguard application. Shellguard should not be applied to wood that is frozen.

HOW IS SHELL-GUARD APPLIED?

Shell-Guard is shipped as a concentrate that is field mixed on a one to one basis with warm water. Stir or agitate the mixture until the Shell-Guard is completely dissolved in the water. The product is then field applied to bare wood with a brush or a low pressure sprayer. Shell-Guard is a penetrating preservative that must be applied to bare wood. Painted or stained surfaces will not allow Shell-Guard to adequately penetrate into the wood. Alternatively, you can drill and inject Shell-Guard into insect galleries and hotspots. Shell-Guard should only be applied when temperatures are between 40 and 90 degrees F.

HOW DO USE SHELLGUARD FO REMEDIAL AND PREVENTATIVE APPLICATIONS?

For remedial and preventative control or organisms attacking wood apply the diluted solution of Shell-Guard by brush, spray or dipping until the surface is thoroughly wet. All cut ends should be thoroughly soaked. Application may also be made by drilling and then injecting the solution under pressure into sound wood or until run-off is observed entry/exit holes of infested wood. To minimize borate leaching a water resistant sealer after the surface is dry to the touch.

IS SHELL-GUARD SAFE TO USE?

Shell-Guard is safe to use according to label directions. It is EPA approved for use in both interior and exterior applications. It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner which is inconsistent with its labeling.

WHAT COVERAGE RATE CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SHELLGUARD?

A gallon of Shell-Guard will cover approximately 215 Square Feet of bare wood.

HOW LONG DOES SHELL-GUARD NEED TO DRY BEFORE FINAL LOG FINISHING CAN BEGIN?

Two to Four Weeks are necessary for Shell-Guard to fully dry. During this time some of the borate may leach back out on to the surface of the logs. Prior to final log finishing any leached borates should be removed via pressure washing.

HOW LONG DOES SHELL-GUARD LAST?

The best thing about Shell-Guard is that one application will last the life of your home as long as the exterior surfaces are maintained with a quality water resistant log finish such as Woodguard, Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding, or Lifeline Ultra-2.

HOW IS SHELL-GUARD PACKAGED?

Shell-Guard is packaged in 1, 2.5 and 5 Gallon Plastic Pails and is available as a concentrate to be mixed 1-1 with water or in a ready to use form.
