WHAT IS SIKKENS LOG PRE-TREATMENT?
With weather delays and workers who do not show up, log home construction can take a lot longer than you might expect. The sun and weather can take a toll on unprotected logs. The left side of the log in the photo below was treated with Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment while the right side was left unprotected. After just 4 months of weather exposure the right side has grayed and shows some signs of mildew. Prior to staining this dirt and weathering must be removed. Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment protects the beauty of your wood during extended construction operations and eases your preparations for finishing your logs.
Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment is a clear waterborne exterior coating which stabilizes logs to minimize cracking and checking. The product keeps out excess moisture while allowing internal moisture vapor in the wood to escape gradually. This is particularly important for logs that are green and have high moisture content. Prior to the application of most finishes such as Woodguard Wood Preservative or Sikkens Cetol Log and Siding , it is critical to allow moisture content to reach 18% or below.

WHAT TYPES OF WOOD IS SIKKENS LOG PRE-TREATMENT DESIGNED TO PROTECT?
Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment is a temporary coating which is designed to be applied to exterior lumber, logs, as well as smooth and resawn wood siding. The product will protect your wood for up to one year.
HOW DO YOU APPLY SIKKENS LOG PRETREATMENT?
Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment can be applied with a nylon bristle
brush, a paint roller or a pump sprayer. The application
temperature should be between 40 and 90 degrees. Coverage will
range between 400 SF per gallon on smooth wood to 200 SF per
gallon on resawn lumber. Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment should be
stirred well before applying and will take 1-3 hours to dry
under normal conditions. Cold weather and high humidity
conditions will extend drying times.
HOW SHOULD THE WOOD BE PREPARED PRIOR TO APPLYING SIKKENS LOG PRE-TREATMENT?
All wood surfaces should be dry and cleaned of dust, dirt, oil, wax or other contaminants that might affect product adhesion or performance. Do not apply Sikkens Log Pre-Treatment over previously treated surfaces. A stiff bristle brush can be used to remove any accumulated dirt or debris.
