HOW DOES SUPERCHINK WORK?
SuperChink has a creamy consistency which makes it easy to apply with
no thinning or premixing needed. It provides a tight seal between the
logs and also provides a decorative textured appearance which looks
great in just about any log home design. Because it is an acrylic,
SuperChink applies very smoothly and easily. The product can be used in
a gap of any size. SuperChink should applied over backer rod or bond
breaker tape. While it may take several weeks for SuperChink to dry
completely, it is normally dry to the touch within 24 hours. SuperChink
will maintain a soft and slightly pliable nature after it has cured so
it never becomes completely hard or rigid to the touch. Once cured,
SuperChink becomes virtually impervious to weather conditions.
SUPERCHINK LOOKS GREAT!
SuperChink is available in the four standard colors shown below. The
colors are designed to enhance the natural beauty of any log home. A
sample card is available upon request.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING SUPERCHINK?
- SuperChink is designed for exterior use on log homes which have
been treated with oil based coatings such as Woodguard or Sikkens
Cetol Log and Siding.
- SuperChink is designed for interior use over water based
interior coatings such as Natural Home Interior and Lifeline
Interior.
- SuperChink provides a flexible, durable seal between logs
through a wide variety of temperature and weather conditions.
- SuperChink is a creamy acrylic that is easy to apply and looks
great.
SUPERCHINK IS SAFE TO USE!
SuperChink is an acrylic emulsion which is completely safe and
nonflammable. Spills which are still wet can be cleaned with a damp
cloth; Equipment may be cleaned with soap and water. Dried chinking
material can be scraped or softened with a safety solvent.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE THE SURFACE OF THE LOG TO
APPLY CHINKING?
The surface of the logs must be clean and free of all dirt, pollen,
sawdust or any other loose material so that the SuperChink can achieve
the best possible adhesion. If the logs are to be stained this should be
done prior to beginning chinking. Logs stained with Woodguard Wood
Preservative should be allowed to cure for three to four weeks prior to
chinking. This will allow the oil to fully penetrate into the log to
allow maximum adhesion.
SHOULD BACKER ROD OR MASKING TAPE BE USED WITH
SUPERCHINK?
Yes. SuperChink is designed to stick to the log above and the log
below and otherwise provide a free reservoir of chinking to allow for
log movement. If there is a uniform gap between the logs use a backer
rod to fill it. Logfinish.com stocks backer rod in a variety of sizes in
both round and trapezoidal shapes. For irregular or tapered spaces
between logs we recommend that EPS beadboard be used. This product can
be easily cut to the desired shape with a utility knife or a hot knife.
For milled logs with a uniform groove, apply a masking tape to the
bottom of the groove and then apply SuperChink. Backer Rod, EPS
Beadboard, and Masking Tape all serve as a bond breaker surface. With
SuperChink applied over a bond breaker, when log movement occurs the
chinking will be able to stretch to accommodate the movement while
maintaining an excellent seal. Properly installed, SuperChink will
effectively resist tearing or delamination from the wood. Experienced
chinkers all confirm that the use of bond breaking backer rod, EPS
Beadboard or masking tape is a critical factor in a long lasting
chinking job.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPLY AND FINISH SUPERCHINK?
A grout bag or a bulk loading gun is the easiest way to apply
SuperChink. For starters apply a ½” bead of chinking at intervals of 1
inch across the chinking gap. Smooth out the chinking to its finish
thickness of at least ¼ of an inch using a slightly damp foam paint
brush or a polyester bristle brush. Completely finish each section
before going on to the next. Once SuperChink begins to set up it becomes
very difficult to make adjustments.

WHAT TEMPERATURE RANGE IS BEST FOR SUPERCHINK?
While chinking, the surface temperature of the logs should never be
above 90 degrees or below 40 degrees. If the logs are too cold the pores
of the wood tighten and do not allow proper bonding to the surface. If
the logs are too hot the liquid in the chinking will evaporate too
quickly resulting in lack of adhesion and the development of blisters. A
good rule is to never chink in direct sunlight.
HOW LONG DOES SUPERCHINK TAKE TO CURE?
After application, SuperChink will dry to the touch in 24-48 hours
depending on weather conditions. The chinking will completely cure all
the way through in 2 to 4 weeks. It is critical to make sure that the
chinking is not exposed to rain or freezing temperatures during the
first 48 hours after application.
WHAT ABOUT BLISTERS IN THE CHINKING?
Blisters can form in chinking when moisture from the chinking or an
external moisture source accumulates in voids beneath the chinking and
heat draws the moisture to the surface causing a blister. Most blisters
occur early in the curing process. To avoid blisters do not chink in
direct sunlight and use a tarp to keep the sunlight off the chinking
during application and curing. If blisters do pop up puncture a hole in
the middle of it releasing the trapped air and push it gently back into
place. After 3 or 4 days, repair the blister by applying a small amount
of chinking in the hole used to release the pressure in the blister.
