HOW DO YOU PREPARE DECKS AND RAILS FOR APPLICATION OF WOODGUARD LDR?

New pressure treated decking and rail should be allowed to dry for minimum of 6 months before applying WOODguard LDR. Before applying WOODguard LDR, make sure the surface is clean and dry to moisture content of 18% or less It is very important that you do not apply Woodguard LDR if rain is expected within 48 hours. If the decks or railings have been previously treated with another product, it must be removed with a chemical wash before using LDR. WOODguard LDR must penetrate to be effective. Most new decking has a mill glaze which must be removed with an oxalic acid cleaner such as X-180 Weathered Wood Restorer or WOODguard Surface Prep. After cleaning, all decks and rails must be thoroughly rinsed with clean water. Allow decks and rails to dry for 3-5 days before applying WOODguard LDR.

HOW DO YOU APPLY WOODGUARD LDR?

WOODguard LDR should be applied between temperatures of 50-95 degrees Fahrenheit and will dry to the touch in 24-48 hours. WOODguard LDR should be applied liberally with a “pump-up” garden-type sprayer and then back-brushed in to remove drips and sags. A regular brush or a lamb’s wool stain applicator work well with this product also. Use a stiff bristle brush on rough or uneven surfaces.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD DECKS AND RAILS BE RETREATED WITH WOODGUARD LDR?

For long term continuing protection, apply a second coat of WOODguard LDR to decks and rails after 3-5 years. South and west sides as well as high traffic area may need treatment sooner due to higher traffic and element exposure. If your deck continues to bead up when water is applied your WOODguard LDR protection is still intact. Each subsequent coat of WOODguard LDR has a cumulative effect inside the wood.

DOES WOODGUARD LDR NEED TO BE REMOVED BEFORE APPLICATION OF A SECOND COAT?

No, you will not need to remove the WOODguard LDR finish before reapplication. and cleaning should be done with a mixture of TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) and bleach solution to remove all dirt and dust.
